What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
