The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
