Early Release Information
Starting on the last day of October at 3 a.m. EST, episode two of the Derry prequel will launch on HBO Max, before its linear broadcast. The remaining installments of the series run will continue to air on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, building toward the final episode on December 14th.
Show Background
Set in Stephen King’s It universe, the new series borrows elements from King’s iconic novel while enlarging the world realized by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One centered on young characters battling supernatural evils, so it’s fitting that this show follows in those footsteps. However, the first installment of the HBO series demonstrates it set out to raise the stakes, offering more frightening moments than Muschietti’s films and creating a brutal tone for what's to come.
Story World and Concepts
Set in 1962, this show presents a different group of grown-ups and kids living in a outwardly charming locale hiding a dark secret. This place operates on a brutal, periodic loop—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a monstrous presence returns once every three decades. Although It: Welcome to Derry might seem like it strays too near to the films initially, what differentiates the digital program is its dual perspective—narrated via the eyes of both children and adults simultaneously. Children are particularly vulnerable to the monster's horror, but older characters aren’t spared dealing with their own nightmares born from the town's ingrained prejudice and hidden paranormal elements.
It: Welcome to Derry debuts on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
