Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
