Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
