Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's historic comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
