A servicemember of the National Guard is showing improvement after he was gravely wounded in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.

The parents of the 24-year-old soldier, twenty-four, say "the injury to his head is slowly healing and that he's beginning to 'look more like himself,'" said West Virginia Governor the governor.

The soldier's relatives anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the next two to three weeks, and they feel hopeful about his progress, according to the official's statement.

Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of a pair of state guardsmen shot when a gunman opened fire not far from the White House on 26 November. His fellow guardsmember, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries.

"Our request remains for all state residents and Americans for their prayers!" the governor said.

Morrisey attended a candlelight gathering on last Friday night for Staff Sgt Wolfe at a local secondary school in his hometown, where the guardsman was once a student.

A pastor at the vigil read a message from the guardsman's mother and father, Jason and Melody Wolfe.

"It is clear to us that there is a difficult journey to go," they wrote, according to regional media outlets.

"But our faith keeps us hopeful. We remain thankful for the prayers and the support from people all over the globe."

Earlier in the week, the governor said the serviceman had acknowledged medical staff with a thumbs-up and was able to move his toes.

Law enforcement have formally accused the alleged gunman, an individual from Afghanistan named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, with premeditated homicide and attempted murder.

Before coming to the US in 2021, he was once a member of a special forces unit in a CIA-backed unit that worked with American troops in the South Asian nation.

Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of two thousand militia personnel whom the former president dispatched to the Washington DC in last summer as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in Democratic-led cities.

In the aftermath of the incident, the former president said he wanted an additional five hundred military personnel deployed to the nation's capital.

The Trump administration has also referenced the shooting as a justification for further restrictive policies.

They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from a list of nations that were part of a travel ban announced over the summer, among them Afghanistan.
